Mindfulness for Kids: Here Come a Thought

I love this video my sister just shared with me.  It’s a beautiful way to show kids how meditation works. (Scroll down to watch.)

The song illustrates the ebb and flow of emotions that we all feel. (Lyrics below.)

It also shows that meditation is not about stopping thoughts, because, well, we can’t actually stop thoughts – if we did, we wouldn’t be alive!

The video illustrates that even with all those thoughts, we can create moments to relax, unwind, and find ourselves.

This is a much more inviting way to share meditation with kids.

With meditation, we can learn to see the thoughts, watch them, and notice when we “lose” ourselves. With meditation, we nurture the voice that says “it’s okay…I’m here,” and “I can return” to being calm, kind, and at peace.

Even in the midst of life’s challenges, we can always take a moment to find ourselves. We can always return, take a moment to sit, and think of “flexibility, love, and trust.”

The science is getting stronger. A recent Forbes article lists several studies showing that meditation helps children in many ways.

  1. Increase in attention
  2. Improve in attendance
  3. Improvement in grades
  4. Reprieve from outside trauma
  5. Better mental health
  6. Better self-awareness & self-regulation
  7. Social-emotional development

I offer personalized meditation programs for children, programs on mindful parenting, and experiential sessions for the entire family.

With meditation, you children will develop invaluable skills that are not taught in schools:

  • how to calm and settle the body,
  • how to focus with intention and patience,
  • how to navigate out of stressful situations,
  • how to let go of judgement,
  • how to cultivate compassion and kindness to self and others.

These skills can have significant effects across all aspects of children's lives.

For example, less anxiety around SAT tests, more resilience around traumatic events like divorce, more kindness and openness to new friends, more calm and loving family time ... these are all possible with a mindfulness meditation practice with as little as 15 minutes of meditation per day.

Call me if you'd like to talk about meditation and mindfulness. I'd be happy to help you find the best resources for you and your family.

Lyrics
from Steven Universe (Mindful Education Episode) (Season 5)

Take a moment to think of just
Flexibility, love and trust

Take a moment to think of just
Flexibility, love and trust

Here comes a thought
That might alarm you

What someone said
And how it harmed you

Something you did
That failed to be charming

Things that you said are
Suddenly swarming, and oh

You're losing sight
You're losing touch

All these little things seem
To matter so much

That they confuse you
That I might lose you

Take a moment, remind yourself to
Take a moment and find yourself

Take a moment to ask yourself if
This is how we fall apart?

But it's not ...
It's okay ...

You've got nothing,
Got nothing ...

Got nothing to fear
I'm here ...

Here comes a thought
That might alarm me

What someone said
And how it harmed me

Something I did
That failed to be charming

Things that I said are
Suddenly swarming, and oh

I'm losing sight
I'm losing touch

All this little things seem
To matter so much

That they confuse me
That I might lose me

Take a moment, remind yourself
To take a moment and find yourself

Take a moment and ask yourself if
This is how we fall apart?

But it's not ...
It's okay ...

I've got nothing
Got nothing,
Got nothing to fear

I'm here (repeat)

And it was just a thought
Just a thought (repeat)

It's okay (repeat)

We can watch (repeat)
We can watch them go by
From here (repeat)

Take a moment to think of just
Flexibility, love and trust

Take a moment to think of just
Flexibility, love and trust
